What it does

  • Gmail, Microsoft, IMAP, POP3 and JMAP accounts

Sign in to Gmail, to Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live or Microsoft 365, or to Fastmail, Stalwart, iCloud, Yahoo or any IMAP, POP3, JMAP and SMTP server. Penguin Mail finds the server settings from your address.

  • One inbox, synced from the tray

Read every account in one inbox or one at a time. On Linux, Penguin Mail keeps syncing from the system tray with an unread count and notifications you can act on.

  • Categories

A bar above the inbox splits it into Primary, Updates, Promotions and Social, using Gmail's own categories. Categorize Sender moves a sender to another category for good.

  • Your calendar

Day, Week, Month and Agenda views of every calendar on every account: Google, Microsoft, and CalDAV where your provider offers it. Answer an invitation from the message it came in.

  • Contacts

Your contacts from Google, Microsoft, or CardDAV where your provider offers it, and suggestions from the people you write to as you type a recipient.

  • OpenPGP and S/MIME

Sign and encrypt through your own GnuPG. Penguin Mail never holds your keys or asks for a passphrase.

  • Rules

Gmail filters, Microsoft inbox rules, and Sieve rules where your provider offers them, listed in plain words, with a form to add one.

  • Seven languages

American and British English, French, German, Spanish, European Portuguese and Traditional Chinese, chosen in Preferences, with the window's controls named for screen readers.

  • An optional assistant

Off until you choose a model. It can run on your own computer (LM Studio, Ollama, or any OpenAI-compatible server), the Anthropic API, or Claude Code through Claude Code. It also supports web search, MCP servers, and skills.

  • Markdown, templates and bulk actions

Turn Markdown into Formatting styles the Markdown in the body, and Write in Markdown goes back. Drop templates at the cursor. Select several messages with Ctrl+click, Shift+click or Ctrl+A, then archive, trash, flag, mark or label them together.

  • Flags, VIPs and Smart Mailboxes

Flag conversations in seven colors, as in Apple Mail. VIPs gather in their own mailbox with starred rows. Smart Mailboxes save conditions on sender, subject, label, age, size or attachments across all accounts or one.

A closer look

Ask your mail a question

Press Ctrl+J and ask which sent mail is still waiting on a reply, or what is in your promotions. The assistant reads your mailboxes with the app's own tools and shows each one it ran.

An inbox split the way Gmail splits it

A bar above the list sorts mail into Primary, Updates, Promotions and Social, using Gmail's own categories. Move a sender to another category and it stays there.

Send it later, or take it back

Schedule a message for Monday morning and it goes out on time while Penguin Mail runs, even from the tray on Linux. Sent mail waits a few seconds with an Undo button first.

An address for every sign-up

Hide My Email makes a Gmail plus address for each site you join. When one of them starts getting spam, turn that address off and its mail goes to the Trash.

Your calendar beside your mail

Day, Week, Month and Agenda views of every calendar on every account. Answer Yes, Maybe or No on an invitation from its event, and search across every account's events.

Your mail stays on your computer

Penguin Mail has no server of its own, no tracking and no ads. Gmail and Google Calendar accounts talk to Google directly, and Microsoft accounts talk to Microsoft Graph, so no other server sees your mail.
